Safeguarding in Therapeutic Practice

This training is designed for staff, SENCOs and DSLs who are delivering one-to-one emotional wellbeing interventions in schools and services.
While all staff receive safeguarding training, working therapeutically introduces additional responsibilities and ethics around confidentiality.
This course provides a practice-focused guide to:

Holding confidentiality safely in 1:1 work

Responding to disclosures calmly and ethically

Making safeguarding decisions without interrupting trust

Understanding thresholds in context

Protecting the child, the practitioner, and the organisation
It supports practitioners to navigate safeguarding within the realities of therapeutic-style practice, whilst maintaining statutory guidance.

Prerequisites
This training is designed for practitioners and anyone who manages those working one-to-one delivering emotional, wellbeing, or therapeutic-style interventions.
Training Objectives:
- To have an understanding of how to safeguard within your therapeutic role
- To understand the legislative and statutory framework that promotes and safeguards a client's welfare
- To know the types of harm and abuse in children and adults
- To understand the ethical boundaries of a therapeutic practitioner within safeguarding frameworks; exploring issues of confidentiality, therapeutic agreements and decision making
- To receive guidance on recording and reporting concerns
- Understand what to do next - signposting
Special requirements
- A stable internet connection with a PC, laptop or tablet that has an active camera. The Drawing and Talking team must be able to see you at all times.
- We recommend using a desktop/laptop computer or a tablet with a large enough screen to comfortably see the presentation and follow media materials.
- If a mobile/tablet device is used make sure to have the Zoom application installed.

About the trainer
Delivered by Lynn Findlay, who is a specialist safeguarding consultant, qualified psychotherapist, and social worker. She has over 20 years of experience working in safeguarding, as well as many years of experience designing and delivering training sessions in social care and therapy.

This short course is ideal for independent practitioners delivering therapeutic work. It supports those in their own practice who are carrying responsibility for safeguarding decisions, offering clear guidance on confidentiality, disclosures, recording, and decision-making when working without a DSL.
